JOPLIN, Mo. — A number of local women handed out some advice on empowerment this evening during an event at Missouri Southern.

"Equal rights, we've reached it. But there's more work to be done," said Dr. Katricia Pierson, President of Crowder College.

According to a study done by Forbes in 2023, women account for around 42 percent of the U.S. workforce, but only 32 percent are in a position of power.

Which was one of the several topics discussed at the second annual 2024 Women's Panel Powerhouse Hour, inside the Ron Richard Athletic Center.

"We realized that we need to celebrate International Women's Day and Month. So last year we held a women's panel and this year we are continuing to do so. This event is all about celebrating women and how far we've come today," said Mack Peterson, MSSU League of Lions President.

The event was put on by the MSSU League of Lions Social Work Club, and featured local, impactful, and important women, like Crowder College President, Dr. Katricia Pierson.

"You are enough. You don't have to find anything that completes you, because you are complete, beautiful, and valuable just as you are," said Dr. Pierson.

Dr. Pierson, along with the seven other panelists, talked about their professional journeys, what it's like in their current roles, and the challenges they still face.

"Anytime that I can be, share my stories, the experiences I've had, being mentored by wonderful women, but also being mentored by men and people who have helped me grow and develop as a leader. I want to pay that forward, essentially," said Dr. Pierson.

Event organizers say the event will return next year.
